My brother writes about a beautiful, haunting song, a recent release from Radiohead called "Give Up the Ghost" on their King of Limbs album. Rightfully so. It is a beautiful song, worthy of repeated listening.
I have one of my own to add here. David Gray's "Davey Jones' Locker"--http://www.amazon.com/Davey-Jones-Locker/dp/B003YOCI40--from his Foundling album. It's a song to which I listen mesmerized, speechless at its exquisite, haunting, ethereal beauty. I can listen to it over and over again, as Josalyn can attest.
Previously I thought the song was about the moment of death. But upon looking at its lyrics closer, I think it refers to the world of dreams and their ability to cause introspection and evaluation of our lives in our more conscious states.
"At the edge of consciousness / where the lines they start to fade / And the spirit goes undressed / of all malice and brocade / At the edges, silvery edges / where the mirror it bends and stretches / At edges of this world / where the waters crash and curl" [I love the Dali-esque imagery here-DW]
After being taken down by Davey Jones into the dark, weighty, oppressive depths of the sea floor holding only fragments and chimera of the life above, the dreamer wants to emerge with a new lease on life.
"Maybe I can free myself / dancing with the swaying kelp / Maybe I'll redeem myself / swirling with the swaying kelp..."
"Make me dance / wanna dance / wanna dance / Let me see the blue sky / I can dance, gotta dance..."
The movement of this song has an ebb and flow to it just like the sea. It moves like waves swelling, building in intensity to a breaking point, and then receding. Also, the sound of the music has that dreamy atmosphere to it.
It's well worth checking out. Do yourself a favor and get this album, not just this song. Once you've heard David Gray's music, it is hard to get enough of it.
